Google’s getting it’s act together on YouTube…
It’s taken a while, but it seems that they are hitting stride with their $1.6bn acquisition.
With Content…
A new service called “Claim Your Content” should be on-line shortly, allowing copyright owners to more easily identify unauthorized uses of their content on the service. This has been a major issue for Google/YouTube up to this point. Once this is in place, Google will be in a better position to negotiate content distribution deals.
Google has also partnered with Adobe to offer online video editing tools to posters on YouTube. Called “Remixer”, it will allow people to trim their video and add transitions and titles, all within a web based interface. This should encourage the creation of more independent/casual content, as well as faster posting of more news type content like video from cell phones - shoot, trim online, and publish.
Both of these should enhance the content available on the YouTube service.
With Distribution…
Apple has just release their previously announced update to AppleTV, bringing YouTube videos to the big screen. This is something I have posted on previously, and believe it is a significant play in the video content ecosystem. Not content to stop at the living room, Google has partnered with Apple to go after the screen in our pockets. Apple’s new iPhone will support acess to YouTube natively at it’s launch next week:
Taken together, these moves are a big step forward for YouTube. It is transforming itself from the Napster of video content into a legitimate player in the space. And with Google behind it, it has the resources and staying power to make web distributed video a mainstream content and entertainment source.
The “Old Mainstream” had better start paying attention…
