Two big reviews of the iPhone came out last night…
They were from Walt Mossberg (WSJ) and David Pogue (NYT). And both were actually very positive.
With the unanimous exception of how bad AT&T’s network is…
There’s no real surprise on that one, but there was a real surprise for me on something else. Both reviewers confirm that the iPhone currently does not support Flash.
As was obvious from my previous post, I feel pretty strongly that Flash support is important. I have trouble understanding why Apple would let the first confirmation that Flash isn’t going to be there come from a third party. There are plenty of folks out there hoping to knock Apple down a peg with the iPhone, and are looking for any openings they can get. It just seems like this could end up being one of the negatives reviewers in general – and bloggers in particular – will latch on to.
With all that said, it still isn’t a deal breaker for me. And since I am clearly more sensitive to this than most folks (given that I produce Flash based video) I’m guessing Apple just saw Flash as an optional nice to have for most people. I’m still hopeful that we will get some announcement shortly on when Adobe will make it available.
The bottom line?…
I’ll be visiting my local AT&T store Friday night to buy one. Or at least to try and buy one.
If you are also thinking of getting an iPhone, check out Walt Mossberg’s video review of it (embeded here) as well as David Pogue’s video review found here. (Shame on the New You Times for not allowing embedding!) Between these and the two text reviews I linked to above, you should have a very good picture of what to expect:
Of course with Apple, you can never rule out last minute surprises!
I’ll give you my personal impressions of the iPhone as soon as I get one…
