New Email Subscription Option…

Share

Slowly but surely I’m rounding out features on this blog…

I have now added an email subscription option for those that prefer to receive new posts that way. If there are any other features you’d like, just let me know.

I’ll do my best to get them integrated…

I'm Still Here…

Sorry for the long delay between posts…

I have been swamped with work related things, and haven’t had much spare time. I should be back posting on a more normal schedule shortly. Also – if I can wrap up a few stuborned post production issues, the next episode of Practical RSS should be out in a couple of days.

Thanks for your patience on all fronts…

Out Of Action For A Few Days…

I wanted to let everyone know that I’m going in to get my knee scoped today, and will probably be off line for a couple of days. I’ll do my best to keep up with emails, but I might fall a bit behind until the weekend.

I've Moved To Feedburner…

Share

In order to have a better understanding of how many people subscribe to my RSS feeds, and what feed readers are being used to access The Digital Edge, I’ve switched my feed handling over to Feedburner.

While I will continue supporting the existing feed URL, I would really appreciate it if folks that have already subscribed would take the time to switch their subscriptions over to the following feed URL’s:

If you just want to subscribe to the MAIN POSTS, click here:

If you also want to see the COMMENTS, you will need to click here in addition to the main posts feed:

Thanks for helping me out by doing this.

Upgrading To WordPress 2.1…

Share

This is my first ‘live’ upgrade to WordPress…

If all goes well, this should be a non-event.  If it doesn’t, you might see a bit of an interruption.

I’ll be turning off all of the plugins during the upgrade, so don’t be surprised when you see them missing.  It will just be temporary.

I’ll let everyone know when it’s done…

UPDATE —————–

The upgrade has been completed!  See Comments for more details.

Sociable Added To The Digital Edge…

Share

I have just added the Sociable plugin to The Digital Edge…

This will now allow you to share posts using Digg, del.icio.usReddit, Furl, and co.mments.  I will be looking to add Technorati to this list shortly as well.

A row of these links will now appear at the end of each post throughout the site.  If you find a post interesting or enjoyable, click on your favorite sharing tool to pass it along.

If you don’t belong to any of these sites, at least take a look at what they offer. They are all valuable tools for building community.

If there are any other social tools you’d like to see added to this site, let me know – I’ll do the best I can to get them in.

Thanks for being part of The Digital Edge…

The Digital Edge: An Overview Of What's New…

Share

There is a lot more than a new “look and feel” behind my move off of iWeb and on to WordPress…

With iWeb, I couldn’t do many of the things most bloggers take for granted – things that I thought were important for building a true community on The Digital Edge. Some of the key ones were:

  • Calendar Based Archiving – Just below the RSS feed links on the left sidebar is a calendar control. This will show you each day that has a post (all hyperlinked), and all of the posts that were made in any month.
  • Real Categories – Below the calendar control on the left sidebar, you will find a list of categories that can be associated with posts that I make. You can click on any category to see the posts associated with it.
  • Integration With MyBlogLog – I now have a widget on the left sidebar that shows the most recent readers of the blog, and includes their photos/avatars and links to their own MyBlogLog page. Unlike the simple link I had on the previous site, you can now have both a face and a voice.  This is something that can help build the sense of community I want to see on this blog. I’ll be adding this to comment posts shortly, extending community identity to this part of the site as well.
  • Links to Most Recent Posts/Comments – On the right sidebar, I now have links to both the most recent posts and comments. I hope this makes joining the conversation easier. I also have Trackbacks, helping to extend the conversation to other blogs.
  • Flash Video Integration – Getting video up on the old site was painful. Viewers needed Quicktime installed, and the resulting files were big. I also couldn’t embed any videos from YouTube in my posts. Well those days are now over. Check out this post I wrote months ago, but couldn’t post until now. Flash IS video on the web, and now I can use it. I have lots more video content to come.
  • Site Statistics – I didn’t have any idea before who was reading The Digital Edge, where they can from, and where on the site they went. I now do, and hope to use those statistics to better tune both the content and structure of the site. This one was a biggie!
  • Both PC and Mac Compatibility – I needed to use the iWeb application to post to the previous blog. That only ran on my Mac, and the posts were stored locally. If I didn’t have my MacBook Pro with me, I couldn’t post. I now can post anywhere I have acess to a browser, and even send in posts via email.  I love my Mac, but being cross platform is liberating.

Getting this site relaunched was a big step, but to really finish the transition, I’ll need to move my old posts/comments over here as well. It is a manual process, so it could take a little time. I will continue making new postings, and fill them in as time permits.

There a lot of cool new things WordPress makes possible. Now I need to get cracking and put them to good use!…

2007: Ring In The New…

Share

I have always been an optimist…

I guess that’s why I always have a feeling of anticipation and excitement at the start of each new year. It’s an opportunity to set new goals I want to work towards, and to open myself to the changes and opportunities that always seem to just come on their own.

2007 is also going to be a new year for this blog…

There are many things I have wanted to do with the Digital Edge – things that I just couldn’t do with Apple’s iWeb. So over the past several weeks, I have been busy working on a complete rework of my site, and have come. I see this as the start point for some exciting changes. Some will be planned additions. Some will be discovered opportunities.

All of them will be focused on making The Digital Edge a more engaging and interactive place…

I am grateful to everyone that has followed The Digital Edge over this past year. It has always been my goal to improve the site for the community that has developed around it, and your feedback continues to be an essential part of that. I welcome any comments or suggestions you may have.

The launch of this new site is just the first step in the next leg of this journey. Thanks for sharing it with me…

Happy New Year, everyone!
