Quick Note On The Digital Edge Survey…

Share

First I want to thank everyone who has responded so far…

Your participation in this survey is appreciated.

In looking at the initial responses, I’ve noticed that there are an exceptionally large number of ‘abandoned’ surveys – survey’s that were filled out but never submitted. Please be sure to click the “Finished? Submit your survey.” button at the bottom of the survey to be sure it is submitted.

If you think you may have missed this step, feel free to ‘vote again’ and let me know what you’d like to see. Your thoughts and suggestions are important to me!.

I want to be sure your voice is heard!…

Help Me Improve The Digital Edge!…

Share

The start of the year is always a good time to make adjustments…

I haven’t made any significant changes to The Digital Edge in well over a year.

From a content perspective, my posts are mostly technical in nature, though I do cover a wide range of other topics as well. While I can tell from usage stats that some topics seem to be more popular than others, to this point I haven’t made a conscience effort to tailor what I post about based on that.

As a point of interest, here are some general trends I have found:

  • Posts on politics and Apple tend to get the most cross links
  • Deeper technical posts generate the most feedback (for some reason, usually via email).
  • My most popular posts – by a wide margin – are episodes of the video series I have produced.

On the layout front, I haven’t done much to change the overall layout or look of the site. I did launch a companion site for video programs (digitaledge.tv), but haven’t really developed that out or integrated it more closely with the main blog.

Essentially, development of the blog has been more opportunistically driven and less planned than I would like.

So it’s time to apply a little more discipline to the process…

With readership growing, I figured a good place to start is to ask everyone more directly what I could be doing to improve The Digital Edge, and make it a more useful and interesting resource.

To that end, I have put together a brief survey to gather your feedback and suggestions. (It appears right at the end of this post.) There are only 5 questions – all of which are optional. Any answers you provide would be valuable to me and greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help!…

NOTE: Please click on the “Finished? Submit your survey.” button at the bottom of the survey when you are done filling it out. There have been a large number of ‘abandoned’ surveys – survey’s that were filled in but never submitted. I want to be sure everyone’s voice is heard, so feel free to ‘vote again’ if you think this might have happened to you!

Apple's 'Apple Store'…

Share

Apple has it own special ‘Apple Store’ on their corporate campus in Cupertino…

They call it ‘The Company Store’.

It carries all of the typical merchandise you see at any other Apple store – iPods and accessories, the full Mac lineup, and walls of software. The aesthetic is slightly different from other stores, but the clean lines and uncluttered feel are classic Apple.

So what’s different about it?…

It’s the only Apple Store in the world that carries Apple branded merchandise. There’s a broad selection of t-shirts, polo’s, hoodies and sweats. There are coffee mugs, pens, portfolios, and desksets, mixed together with a variety novelty/gift items.

And all are sporting an Apple logo…

While I was out in the Bay Area a couple of weeks ago, I dropped by The Company Store and shot a few video clips of it to share with you:

For the Mac faithful (and you know who you are), this store – along with “The Cube” in New York – should be on your ‘must visit’ list.

Enjoy the video until then…

NOTE: A hi-def version of this video is available on the DigitalEdge.tv podcast available on iTunes

Is This RIM's Blackberry "Thunder"?…

Share

RIM’s upcoming “Thunder” is supposed to be their answer to the iPhone…

Based on this video over at Crackberry.com, I wouldn’t be too sure:

[Unfortunately this link has been removed by YouTube]

Assuming this video is genuine, I’m not terribly impressed by the Thunder…

While certainly functional, it doesn’t appear to be an “Apple Killer” by any means. Needing to use a “Press and Hold” to scroll the screen seems clunky, and the process for selection/click looks more like an “ATM” style experience than a modern touch screen. That said, it may be an early prototype, or even a total – albeit clever – fake (people are becoming quite good at that these days).

But if this is the real deal we’re looking at, I’m not sure what RIM hopes to accomplish with it. Maybe they want to position it as offering an iPhone experience, but on a real network like Verizon. That approach may sound good in theory, but I’m not sure how it would play in the marketplace. Even if they don’t own one, people have a good idea how great the iPhone experience is. The bar has been set, even for die hard Verizon fans.

I have a lot of respect for RIM, but I was expecting to see something more.

Something “Wow!”.

Hopefully it will be there when Thunder is released…

UPDATE:

Thanks to a comment from reader JOHN, I have a new video to embed:

[This link has also been removed - can't keep up with the take-down orders!]

Based on John’s comment, I wanted to clarify some things in this post. The new Blackberry will be called the STORM 9530 not the THUNDER. The THUNDER will be the name of a GSM version of the device that will be released at some future date. Thanks John!

The Future Of Competitive Intelligence…

Share

My company InfoNgen was invited to present at SLA 2008…

In a prior post, I wrote about some of the key points I made during a presentation to competitive intelligence professionals at this year’s Special Librarians Association Conference in Seattle.

As a followup, I’ve produced a video of that presentation that is now available over on our companion video blog The DIGITALedge.TV.

At just over 14 minutes long, it’s not the ideal ‘web video’ length. However, the presentation does cover a lot of ground, and provides a clear overview of the semantic based capabilities InfoNgen is currently bringing to the marketplace. Analyzing trends across information sets – covered in this video – is an especially interesting component of what we do, and it will continue to grow in importance over time.

This feels like a marketplace on the verge of taking off…

New Companion Site: "The DIGITALedge.TV"…

Share

I am in the process of redoing parts of this blog…

To get started, I decided to focus on better ways to deal with video. Creating video based content for The DIGITALedge is important to me, but the current format of this blog does a poor job of organizing and presenting it. I wanted a better way to showcase the video content I produce. I was looking to create an experience that grouped videos into series, and hopefully built more community around particular shows. I felt that the best way to achieve that was to create a video-only companion site to this blog…

Introducing The DIGITALedge.TV

When new videos are produced for The DIGITALedge.TV, they will continue to appear as posts in this blog as well. Like regular posts, they will appear individually and fade into the archives over time. Over on The DIGITALedge.TV, however, they will be more visible for far longer, and grouped in a way that will make them easier to watch.

Like so many things, this new site is a work-in-progress. It will no doubt evolve over time, and if there are any issues that come up, I will work to get them fixed as quickly as possible.

I welcome any and all feedback.

Enjoy!…

The Quest For iPhone 3G…

Share

There’s something special about having new technology the day it comes out…

I spent a big chunk of last Friday waiting on a couple of lines to get my hands on the newly launched iPhone 3G.

Based on my previous unsuccessful experience of trying to get the original iPhone from an AT&T store when it launched a year ago, I decided the Apple Store was the only way to go. Being in New York, I had the luxury of three choices, and decided to head to the newest (and least known) Apple Store over on 14th Street and Ninth Avenue – in the heart of the old meat packing district.

I wanted to document the experience for this blog, so I took a video camera along to record what it’s like being part of a line at an Apple launch event. This short video captures the highlights:

The new iPhone is great, but does have a few quirks and shortcomings that I’ll tell you about in a follow-up review. (Overall, it’s still the best “Smartphone” you can buy.)

Feel free to share.

Enjoy!…

An Update On re:SEARCH…

Share

It’s been a while since I introduced my upcoming web show re:SEARCH…

Though preproduction on re:SEARCH has taken a bit longer than originally planned, things are now moving along. Set construction should be finishing up in a couple of weeks (yes – even virtual sets have construction requirements), and we should start shooting episodes later this month.

I plan to cover a lot of ground in the series, weaving fundamental concepts with more advanced topics. It will combine underlying technical concepts with practical applications, and will highlight various sites and tools that can help in the process of search and discovery.

If there are specific search related topics you would like to see addressed in the show, just shoot me an email or leave a comment below. I want to make re:SEARCH as interesting and relevant to everyone as possible, so I welcome your suggestions.

I hope you’ll join me when it launches…

Coming Soon: re:SEARCH…

Share

The Digital Edge Blog will be launching a new video podcast in February 2008 called re:SEARCH.

While most people are comfortable doing simple web searches, more complex searches involve a lot more than just typing a simple word or phrase into Google. If you need to really dig in to a topic, there’s a real process behind doing it successfully.

It’s part science and part art…

Our new web series re:SEARCH will be focused specifically on the more complex search domain, and will provide a strong foundation of techniques and strategies for use by any serious web searcher. Here’s our new promotional spot for it:

I’m really excited to be doing this series – it seems to address a need that has really been underserved. If there are specific concepts you would like me to cover, just post into the comments section or drop me an email at thedigitaledge@mac.com.

The first episode should launch at the end of February 2008.

I hope to see you then!…
